Avian Paleontology and Evolution

چکیده
Miocoracias chenevali, nov. gen., nov. spec., a new genus and species of roller (Aves: Coraciiformes s. s.: Coraciidae) is described from the Early Miocene of Saint-Gérand-le-Puy. This family had not yet been reported from the rich fossil avifauna of this area. Although the material is fragmentary it shows morphological characteristics different from those of the extinct family Geranopteridae, and can be attributed to the Recent family Coraciidae. The rodents found in the same locality make it possible to attribute it to the MN2a zone. An appendix gives an updated list of the fossil birds identified in the Saint-Gérand-le-Puy area.

متن کاملEvolution of antero‐posterior patterning of the limb: Insights from the chick
The developing limbs of chicken embryos have served as pioneering models for understanding pattern formation for over a century. The ease with which chick wing and leg buds can be experimentally manipulated, while the embryo is still in the egg, has resulted in the discovery of important developmental organisers, and subsequently, the signals that they produce. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is produced ...

متن کاملPhylogenetic placement, developmental trajectories and evolutionary implications of a feathered dinosaur tail in Mid-Cretaceous amber
In a recent report in Current Biology, Xing and colleagues [1] present a small fragment of a vertebrate tail preserved in amber that bears integumentary appendages (DIP-V-15103, Dexu Institute of Paleontology, Chaozhou, China; Figure 1). Following several analyses using cutting-edge technology the authors conclude that: the tail belongs to a non-avian theropod dinosaur (non-avialan according to...

A mong the most striking avian anatomical divergences from the typical tetrapod pattern is the reduction of the cephalic alimentary canal to a bare minimum required for food procurement, generally believed to be an adaptation for lightening the avian body for flight (1). Much of this anatomical modification involved jettisoning teeth concomitantly with the acquisition of a horny beak, the reduc...
